Holiday giveaway

2009 was an incredible year! I’ve had nine releases, from shorts to novellas. Another novel’s in second edits, and the eleventh contracted story will be released on Feb. 10, 2010 (two days before my birthday – nice present, huh?).

It’s been a real whirlwind of a year, and went by too quickly! But I’m looking forward to more of the same next year. I have three novels under submission, and another two ready to go.

Because it’s the season of giving, starting today I’ll run a contest here on my blog. Just tell me what draws you to a story, and you’re automatically entered! On New Year’s Eve, I’ll pick a winner at random and announce it on my blog. Don’t forget to leave your email address so I know how to contact you. The winner will have the choice of any of these releases:

1. Seventh Heaven, a Sixties-era short romance, the #1 bestseller on The Wild Rose Press all of July! Woo hoo!
2. The Duende and the Muse, a short fantasy romance
3. Liberation via Pen, a short contemporary romance
4. One Soul for Sale, a contemporary fantasy
5. The Lure of the Vine, a contemporary fantasy
6. Going with Gravity, contemporary romance
7. Picture This, contemporary
8. Wilderness Girl, contemporary erotic romance
9. Reflections, a short contemporary fantasy

You can find excerpts, trailers and reviews for these stories on my web site.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday, and may the new year bring you all the best!

And finally, here are more Christmas tunes. Springsteen's Santa Claus Is Coming to Town is an all-time favorite, and not just because I'm a Jersey girl. Here, his youthful energy and enthusiasm shine through.

I've always been a big Pretenders fan, too, so when Chrissy Hynde released 2000 Miles, it became an instant hit with me, at least.

Cate, what an amazing year you’ve had! Congratulations, and I so hope your success continues!

What draws me to a story…hmm lemme think. A blurb I’ve never read anywhere else before. Something in it that makes me feel this book offers me something different, something unique, and that tells me I’ll reading about real flesh-and-blood characters, not cardboard stereotypes.

So if I make it past the blurb (lol) on to the excerpt. No clichés, please. ;-) No buzzwords, stock phrases, or the same old chestnuts I’ve seen in too many other stories. If the writer’s voice is original and confident, and makes me feel s/he’s done her job as a writer to bring me something I absolutely HAVE to read, then I’m in.

And there’s that one, final thing that I just can’t name, but I know it when I see it. It’s a certain spark, it’s that puff of fresh air, the tingle at the back of the neck, when you know you’ve found a real goodie….it’s that rare, special touch, that way with words, the way the voice ‘sounds’ on the page. Not all writers have that, but if they do, then I’m in.

Yeah, I’m hard to please! But there are just too many good books to choose from, and a gal just can’t read them all….:)

Oh, and I love The Boss too!

Happy Christmas to you and yours, Cate, and all the best for a fabulous 2010.

Jane, so good of you to visit from across the pond! Thanks so much.
I agree, time's too short these days, and so many stories tempt me!
Wishing you a Happy Christmas and a wonderful new year!

Congrats on your 2009 year and it looks like it is continuing into 2010. I am sure it will. I enjoy your books. Of course, I love great romances, no matter what genre. I have alot of certain authors that I read, but I can also look at a cover,of an author that I have never read, and usually tell you if I am going to like it. That seems odd to me, but I have not been fooled very often.
The problem is not enough time in a year to read everything I want to. You should see my stack of books :0

Thanks for the wonderful compliment, Judy! Yes, pretty soon I'll have to move my stack of TBR reads to the floor or they'll topple off my nightstand. And then there are the ebooks waiting in the My Digital Editions folder...
Have a wonderful holiday!

There's a list of things that combine to get me to buy a story. Is it an author I know? Do I like the cover? Is the blurb any good? How's the excerpt read?

The cover has to spark my curiosity. The blurb has to have a good hook. The excerpt has to show me a strong heroine and hero.

Congrats on a fabulous year!

What draws me to a story...

It used to be (and sometimes still is) the cover. It it looks interesting, I'll read the back cover blurb.

Now with ebooks, it's either the author or the genre..

Congratulations on your year! May 2010 be even better. What draws me to a book is first the cover. If I like the cover I'll pick it up then I'll read the blurb. If I like the blurb then I'll buy the book. Genre doesn't matter as much as an interesting blurb that makes me want to read the book. If I can't put the book down then it's good read. An even better read is when I don't want the book to end.
