Rearranging the blog

This week began the switch to a page for the Author Spotlights. I hope you'll check back each week to visit the new featured author.

Kicking off this new page is the incomparable Ginger Simpson.  Please visit Ginger and read her great advice about reviews and critics.

If you miss a week, don't worry. I'll move the links for past weeks to the bottom of the page so you can visit them whenever you'd like. Or, use the search feature to find other posts by a favorite author.

I'll also be launching an occasional feature, Author Chat, an interview which focuses more on the author than their books and writing process.  A little more fun, and less intense than the the Author Spotlight, lol.

At this point, I'm thinking these will be limited to once or twice a month. If you're interested, shoot me an email at cate.masters AT gmail.com. I'd love to feature you and your book!

Author Chat with Linda Engman

Hi Linda! So glad to have you at Author Chat, where we can learn a little bit about you, and your book.
Cate, thanks so much for having me here today.

Grab a cappuccino and let’s chat. Unless you have another favorite drink (alcoholic or otherwise)?
Actually a cappuccino sounds perfect.  Although I wouldn’t turn down a martini or glass of white wine.

A woman after my own heart. :) Fur or feathers, petwise?
My family and I have two Griffon hunting dogs, Bay and Pal.  They camp out in the corner of my living room and follow me around all day.  The highlight of their week is the UPS man delivering a box or consuming popcorn on the weekends.

Any pet peeves? One thing that really burns your biscuits?
I’m a pretty easy going person so it takes a lot to rattle me.  But if I had to pick, I’d say my husband’s messy habits.  I’m a total neat freak and constantly find myself picking up after him.  Besides that he’s a night owl-I’m a morning person.  He drinks beer-I’m into wine.  The list is endless.  I guess opposites do attract.

Sounds like me and my hubby! Favorite quote?
“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” Coco Chanel

Love that. What’s your ideal day like?
First of all having my makeup looking perfect for once along with having a good hair day.  Then enjoying a blueberry muffin and coffee, before a fun day of shopping and lunch out with my girlfriends or daughter.  Followed up by cocktails and dinner out with my husband.  If I could do this every day I’d be in heaven!  My other perfect day is hiking or skiing with my family, followed up by a great dinner together and a movie.  My son picks out the best action movies.  He’s got me hooked on them.

If you could live out any fantasy, what would you do?
I’d love to live in Manhattan and work as a cosmetic executive and live in a trendy modern loft in SoHo.  I can just imagine the big walk-in closet I’d have and all the shoes I’d buy.

I love NY too. Beethoven, Beatles, Foo Fighters or Keith Urban?
My favorites are a mix of Stone Temple Pilots, Tony Bennett, Scorpions, Diana Krall, Amy Winehouse, Travis Tritt, to name a few.  I love all kinds of music as you can tell.

My tastes are very electic too. Do you have a music playlist for your book?
Music for me plays a big part in developing a story and even characters personalities.  For each of my romance novels I create a different play list.  For Manhattan Holiday, I listened to a lot of Christmas music as I wrote the scenes that took place in snowy Manhattan.   For the scenes in Miami, I listened to Alejandro Sanz for that sexy Latin influence.

Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, and why?
Easily, I’d invite all the girls from my two Cedar Point romance novels, I’ve Got You and Falling For You:  Amber, Heather, Stacy, and Brook.  In each book these ladies loved to gossip about men over cocktails and yummy food.  They have the best time together, so it would definitely be a fun evening with them.  I also wouldn’t mind a dinner out with my sexy rugged hero Cooper Gerhardt from FFY.  Although I’m sure my husband would insist on coming along. J

While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
How much I love my characters and how hard it is to move on to another project once I’m finished.  I loved Cedar Point in I’ve Got You so much, I wrote the sequel Falling For You, and have readers and reviewers asking for a third book in the series.  I also especially loved my time working on Manhattan Holiday.  It’s such a fun, sexy, fantasy story, that I hated to see it end.  I’m contemplating writing another holiday story set in Manhattan.

They do become like family, don’t they? Where can readers find out more about you?
Readers are welcome to visit my website and blog.  I update it every month with new information and fun things on my blog.  There is also information where to find my books.  I also have an email address on my website for readers to send me mail.  I’m also on Facebook and love it when readers send me friend requests.
Please share a book blurb and/or excerpt.

Book Blurb: Manhattan Holiday

Get Ready for a Very Romantic Holiday

Recently jilted, legal assistant April Sutton is ready to find a way to forget her ex-fiancĂ© and the heartache she’s been carrying around snowy Manhattan.  With the New Year holiday approaching she’s determined to restart her life.  Never in her wildest dreams does she expect a last minute marriage to dynamic Roman Vasquez, along with a sultry weekend trip and a romantic dream wedding, to do the trick.

In order to meet the New Year’s Eve deadline of his grandfather’s will, successful developer Roman Vasquez will do whatever it takes.  Even if it means giving up his bachelor status and convincing an unwilling April Sutton to tie the knot.  Although he finds all it takes to persuade her is—one kiss, a contract, and the wedding of her dreams.

Will Roman and April keep it all business...or let the magic of the holiday season, along with meddling friends, family, and hidden feelings turn their temporary whirlwind marriage into everlasting love?

Thanks for chatting, Linda! Hope your holidays are merry.

Author Chat with Rachel Brimble

I'm so glad to have Rachel Brimble back on my blog, a warm and talented author.
Hi Rachel! So glad to have you at Author Chat, where we can learn a little bit about you, and your book. Grab a cappuccino and let’s chat. Unless you have another favorite drink (alcoholic or otherwise)?
Ooh, a cold glass of Chablis would be bliss right now…thank you very much! J

Cheers! :) Fur or feathers, petwise?
Fur – complete dog nut!

Me too, along with too many other species. Any pet peeves? One thing that really burns your biscuits?
Ignorance and prejudice.

Couldn't agree more. Favorite quote?
“Set it up the way you want it to be” – Iylana Vanzant

Oo, love that! What’s your ideal day like?
Sitting in my sunny back garden with the laptop open, a cold glass of diet coke and Max, my black Lab at my feet – then later on the kids and hubby come home and we have a barbecue with a few glasses of wine (for hubby and me, of course!).

Ah, that sounds lovely. If you could live out any fantasy, what would you do?
Live in a big house by the stream running through my favorite place in the world (so far!), Bourton-On-The-Water in the Cotswolds, UK. I’d be paid thousands of pounds to write all day and then enjoy the evenings as I please…bliss!!

Even more lovely! Beethoven, Beatles, Foo Fighters or Keith Urban?
Beatles

I think I was the youngest Beatlemaniac, lol. Do you have a music playlist for your book?
No, the only story I have ever listen to music while writing was Transatlantic Loving which is part of The Wild Rose Press, Class of ’85 series. I had huge fun listening to the old 1980s power ballads to get me in the mood. It really worked, lol!

Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, and why?
Most would be Andrew from The Arrival of Lily Curtis because he’s just so good and masculine, kind and fair. I loved to spend some down time with that man ;)
Least would be Marcia from Getting It Right This Time – read the book and you’ll understand why. NOT a very nice lady!!

While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
How hard it is to keep the momentum going! I still struggling through the dreaded ‘sagging middle’ and I’m on book number nine at the moment. No one ever said it gets easier, that’s for sure!

That's for sure! lol Where can readers find out more about you?

Blurb:
Nightclub manager Grace Butler is on a mission to buy the pub where her
mother's ashes are scattered but the owner wants to sell to anyone but her. And that owner happens to be her father...who has a secret she
will do anything to discover.
Social worker and all around good guy Jimmy Betts needs funds to buy a housefor three special kids before their care home closes. Time is running out and he's desperate for cash. He agrees to to a one-time 'job' for bad-man Karl Butler. But in a sudden turn of events, Jimmy finds himself employed by Karl's beautiful, funny and incredibly sexy daughter, Grace. Their lives couldn't be more different, yet one thread binds them: they're both trying to escape the bonds of their fathers. Maybe the only way they'll be free is by being together, instead of alone.

Wow, gorgeous cover. Congrats on another release, and thanks for chatting Rachel! Best of luck!

Author Chat with David Brown

Hi David! So glad to have you at Author Chat, where we can learn a little bit about you, and your book.
Thank you. It’s a pleasure to be here and looking forward to the rest of the interview.
Grab a cappuccino and let’s chat. Unless you have another favorite drink (alcoholic or otherwise)?
Usually a cup of tea during the day but if it’s the evening a coke and whisky usually suffices.

Tea's a necessity for me too. Fur or feathers, petwise?
My wife and I own six cats so I’ll say fur.

Any pet peeves? One thing that really burns your biscuits?
Pets that don’t do as they’re told. Unfortunately, all six of our cats are guilty of this, at least once every hour, probably more to be honest!

My furry kids never listen either. :) Favorite quote?
Einstein on Gandhi: “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this, ever in flesh and blood, walked upon this earth.”
What’s your ideal day like?
I’ll awake mid-morning and not feel tired, the cats will be on their best behavior, my wife, Donna, will be with me and I’ll get plenty of writing done before spending some quality time with my family, maybe grab a takeaway and a have a few drinks in the evening, staying up late watching a film or comedies. That sounds a pretty good day.

It certainly does. If you could live out any fantasy, what would you do?
I would probably just wander the world and not have to worry about money or other commitments when doing so. I enjoy fantasy fiction tales with adventurers travelling across their respective worlds but in the real world there is so much I would like to see and I just don’t think there are enough years in the average life to do it all!
That sounds wonderful as well. Beethoven, Beatles, Foo Fighters or Keith Urban?
It has to be the Beatles. They’re not my favourite group, but their influence on music is without question and what they achieved in such a short space of time is incredible. Many groups since have had one or two outstanding talents but the Beatles had a quartet of gifted musicians who each branched out into solo careers though poor Ringo didn’t fare as well as the others!
Do you have a music playlist for your book?
I don’t have a playlist as such. I like listening to the likes of The Decemberists, Nirvana, Guns ‘N’ Roses when I’m writing. Music by zero-project was used in the trailer for Fezariu’s Epiphany and also adorns my website.
Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, and why?
I’d most like to invite the very talkative toldere, Vintaro, who loves alcohol and a spot of humour. We’d get along famously. I’d least enjoy the company of the misogynist, Vincent Birchill, the sort of man I utterly despise.

While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
I owe thanks to my wife, Donna, for this really as she is my no.1 critic. When she fed back about Fezariu’s Epiphany it was often citing issues with overlong sentences which were too flowery in the use of language. I had mistakenly assumed with some sentences that reeling off two or three lines was better than just keeping it simple and concise. I’ve certainly learned my lesson now!

Lucky you to have such a spouse! Where can readers find out more about you?
You can find me on Twitter (@elenchera) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/fezariu), I have a website elenchera.com and a regular blog, The World According to Dave (http://blog.elenchera.com)

Please share a book blurb and/or excerpt from Fezariu's Epiphany.
Short Blurb
The White Oak, Clarendon’s oldest brothel, lured and destroyed men by the thousands. Fezariu was different. He had never been drawn by the White Oak’s vices but the brothel had still ruined him when he was just a boy.

Salvation came in the form of the Merelax Mercenaries – Elenchera’s most prestigious hired hands. They gave Fezariu the chance to escape from his past. Immersed in the world of dangerous assignments in the colonies Fezariu longed to forget everything about his childhood but only in facing the past would he ever be free of it.
Excerpt
When it came Fezariu leapt over the barrels and was flanked by Arshea and Vintaro with the other mercenaries holding a disciplined line on either side of him. They ran through the smoke rising from the flames and clouds of dust from the debris and soon found themselves in the pandemonium of the conflict raging throughout the square.

Across the expanse were hundreds of valkayan rebels engaged in an epic tussle with the colonists. Fezariu’s charge of Merelax Mercenaries smashed into the side of the closely packed valkayans who were already in disarray from the showers of arrows raining down on them from General Bayard’s archers. When the last of the bow strings came to rest the fate of Redemption was left to be decided by those fighting in the central square.

Fezariu’s line of mercenaries remained unbroken but many had fallen to the stubborn valkayan rebels whose determination was not swayed by the wilting of their numbers. Gradually the valkayans began to seize the advantage and when Fezariu’s line was broken carnage reigned throughout the central square with victory and defeat very much in the balance for all concerned.

The failing of Fezariu’s line bred indiscipline amongst the mercenaries who broke formation and engaged in their own personal struggles. Fezariu remained close to Arshea and Vintaro with the trio repelling attacks with ease and providing cover for each other from any surprise ambush. The rebels’ resolve continued though and at the next explosion it appeared all hope of defending the city would be lost.

Author Chat with Sherry Gloag

Hi Sherry! So glad to have you at Author Chat, where we can learn a little bit about you, and your book.
Grab a cappuccino and let’s chat. Unless you have another favorite drink (alcoholic or otherwise)?
Thank you, I’m what is known in some areas of the UK as a ‘tea-face’, so give me a moment while I just make a fresh brew.

A woman after my own heart. :) Fur or feathers, petwise?
Both!
Just a couple of days ago I came across a grounded Swift.  The birds’ wings are so long they cannot take off when grounded.  We had to climb on top of a garden shed and hurl it into the sky to ensure it flew away successfully!  I blogged about it on my blog, The Heart ofRomance.

Poor thing! Good thing you were there to help. :) Any pet peeves? One thing that really burns your biscuits?
Drivers that pull out in front of you then stop and turn of a few yards up the road.

Favorite quote?
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. ~ Robert Gallagher

Ha! Love it. What’s your ideal day like?
One that goes to plan? ROFL!  Seriously I am so B A D at time management, regardless of how hard I try to get it in hand, but when I plan a day of relaxation, it is having a good book to read, somewhere comfortable where I won’t be interrupted and a warm, not too hot, sunny day.

Ah, lovely. Beethoven, Beatles, Foo Fighters or Keith Urban?
Beethoven and the Beatles

Do you have a music playlist for your book?
Not usually, as I prefer silence –or near silence- when writing

I'm the same way. Which of your characters would you most/least to invite to dinner, and why?
I would least like to invite Sophie, from my debut novel, The Brat, published by The Wild Rose Press, because she is such a self-focused bitch and will do anything to ensure her status and position.
Trudi Delaney and Rafe Hawk, the heroine and hero of my current novel, Duty Calls, published by Black Opal Books in also available  ‘e’ and print versions are a couple I’d like to have dinner with because both (like Gina in The Brat) overcame their past traumas to carve a rich and happy future for themselves.

Sounds like a great party! While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
How the characters developed beneath my fingertips.  I don’t know how many other writers share this, but sometimes I look back and wonder how they developed the way they did, because they experience and act in ways I’d never imagine.

Where can readers find out more about you?

Please share a book blurb and/or excerpt (suitable for general audiences, please). [Don’t forget to include a buy link! And a web-friendly, low-res cover image.]

Duty Calls
BLURB
She’d saved his life…
Rafe Hawk refuses to accept the inheritance, of a large English estate, and the title that goes with it, after his birth father’s death because the man chose duty over the woman he loved and their son.
So when he finds himself temporarily living at Kinsale Hall, he’s not prepared to trust anyone associated with the place, including Trudi Delaney and her daughter.
So why, when he looks into their eyes, does he suddenly remember a woman who may have lost her life after a storm while saving his over a decade ago?

Now he could destroy hers.
Instinct warns Trudi Delaney the arrival of the contemptuous American architect at Kinsale Hall will change her life forever. Especially when she discovers he spends so much of his time in areas of Kinsale Hall off-limits to visitors.
Eleven years after escaping from her psychotic husband with a stranger, she’s still plagued by nightmares of events she can’t remember. Events such as, who fathered her beautiful daughter?
Now more than a decade later, she is confronted by another stranger. Will this one destroy everything she holds dear?

EXCERPT
“Stop the car!” Rafe Hawk swung round to face the driver. “I recognise this road. You never said the commission to build those retirement units was at Kinsale Hall. You know damn well I swore never set foot in the place again, eleven years ago.”

Rage hazed his vision. “You knew I’d refuse the commission if you’d revealed the location, and because you withheld that vital information, Arthur, this contract is null and void.” He shot forward in his seat when Arthur tramped on the brakes.
His friend from their Uni days skewed round in his seat. “How long have we known each other?”
Startled by Arthur Clifton’s question, Rafe hesitated. “What’s the length of our friendship got to do with anything? Other than the fact you’re stretching it very thin, if you think I’ll set foot on Kinsale territory again.” He swung open the car door and leaped out, his fingers tunnelling through his windswept hair.
Brilliant blue skies overhead offered a large playground for the early summer sunshine, and the fluffy white clouds sailing by. He saw the high chimney-tops through the trees.
“Do you really think I’d bring you here without a very good reason?” Arthur remained in his seat, his hands on the steering wheel, watching Rafe pace up and down the soft verge beside the open-topped car.
"I can't think of a single reason good enough that justifies you resurrecting events that nearly cost me my life, and possibly cost the life on an unknown woman."

Wonderful! Thanks so much for chatting Sherry!
Thanks for inviting me over today.  It’s a pleasure to be here :-)
