It has to be said

Piracy is a romanticized term for illegal book sharing. Not only are hackers stealing ebooks to distribute on their own sites, but “book clubs” also offer the chance to read an ebook and pass it on.

Is it any wonder no indie author can catch a break? Or has to work full time at writing, but also a day job just to be able to do what they love?

Not only do ebook authors not get an advance, and receive only a percentage of royalties, but sales are lowered by thieves who siphon off profits with illegal sharing.

And make no mistake about it: it is illegal.

Margaret West cited some disheartening statistics in her recent post. But disheartening doesn’t begin to cover what I felt when I read Tracy L. Darity’s post about CreateSpace allowing resellers to print POD books and sell them at an insanely high price, and when the author fought back by selling at a lower price, snap! the other seller instantly lowered their price to outsell her. Oh, and there’s much more. Read her post, though it may turn your stomach to learn resellers can use POD to sell your book as used, so you the author will never see a profit and John Kremer’s post about how Amazon rips off authors.

So now I have to limit distribution of my Kindle books because resellers will pilfer it. I wondered how some copies of my books were being sold at ridiculously high prices. That’s the reason.

Amazon already forces authors to opt into their lending program, which cuts into profits. Why this media giant needs to rip off small-time authors, I’ll never understand. But I highly discourage readers from using this feature. Like many others, I priced my work below its fair value to encourage readers to buy. I know the economy’s tough. I like free stories too, when authors (and sometimes publishers) make them available as such. Not when others decide they should be free and help themselves.

Worse, some authors are finding their work resold under a different name. Apparently some peole are creative in the worst ways: converting ebooks to text, then putting a new cover on it and slapping their name on the product. Also covered under Mr. Kremer’s post.

I can’t wrap my head around how someone can put so much effort into stealing another person’s hard work. It just boggles my mind. Authors put so much heart and soul into their stories, sometimes years of their lives. And just like that, someone steals it?

Fighting illegal sharing – and Amazon, it seems – is impossible. So my best defense is to educate readers. If you love the books authors write, then please please please never download a book from any sharing site. Please please please give the authors their due by purchasing directly from the publisher, or if the author’s self-pubbed, then use the links they provide. Don’t buy from a reseller. Don’t download a free copy. You’re hurting them more than you know. You may justify it by saying, “it’s only one copy, it won’t impact them” but that’s wrong. Everyone thinks the same thing, and illegally shared copies quickly add up to many many copies. Please thank the author who writes stories you love by legally purchasing their work. And if you want to share their work, recommend your friends buy copies too. But don’t give it away. This business is tough enough. Authors need your support.

Margaret West in the Author Spotlight

What is Romance?
by Margaret West

I write paranormal and romance novels. The question I ask today is...What is Romance? To define it, romance is the very essence of life. Without it your love life will never be complete. It brings a sort of identity to your relationship. An elderly man holding the hand of his elderly wife. They’ve probably done that for years, yet still, they need that closeness. So where does romance come from? Grand gestures, flowery words? No, it comes from the heart. It’s nice to have a man open a door for you, buy you flowers for no other reason than he wanted to.

In the daily grind of life it’s possible to forget about each other. That flame that once burned in your heart begins to diminish to a pale glow and suddenly you find yourself not knowing each other anymore. To hold onto your love, there has to romance and that’s what I try and put into all my novels.

When the real world gets too much to bear sometimes it’s nice into slip into a fictional reality. Read as a love story unfolds with all its twists and turns..
Full of tears, laughter and disappointments, my latest release Spirit Intervention is a comedy romance. When a mother from the spirit world tries to change her daughters love interest, havoc ensues and if she doesn’t put it right, her Grandchildren will never be born.

Abigail Cottage is my next release. This is a dark paranormal, written when I was just finding my feet as a writer over 20 years ago. When Abigail falls in love with Justin she can’t begin to know the world of hurt she is heading into. Gorgeous, kind, rich – he’s the man we all dream to meet. BUT, all is not what it seems, because Justin is a demon from hell, disguised as a mortal being. He wants her and will kill or maim anyone who tries to stop him. Namely Shaun the real hero, who wants Abigail more! So what does a mortal man do against a demon? He enlists the help of a gypsy of course. But not any old gypsy. Rosa knows Justin very well and has the powers of the spirit world on her side to fight him. Using crystals as a powerful weapon, the light of the spirit world to lead them, they embark on a battle with the whole of the underworld. Many loved ones will lose their lives. This isn’t a book where everyone survives. In real life, bad things happen. In Abigail Cottage, terrible tragedies occur too. Believe... not every story can have a happy ending.

In the Author Spotlight: Margaret West

Cate: Please welcome Margaret West. Margaret, will you please share a short bio with us?
Margaret: Morning Cate. Thanks for having me. Here is a bit about my life.
Born in England, Margaret moved to the Kent countryside five years ago to get away from the busy life in London. She married with two grown up children and has worked in various fields of work. She is a Clairknowing medium, Crystal Therapist, Parapsychologist and Psychic Development tutor.
She’s been writing over 20 years and has numerous short stories, novels and articles published. Margaret writes romance and paranormals, incorporating her spiritual experiences into her books.

Cate: Tell us about Abigail Cottage and where it's available.
Margaret: Abigail Cottage is a dark paranormal. Much darker than I usually write. It is a mixture of romance, lust with murder and intrigue. It will be released in a few weeks but I have a pre order link if anyone wishes to use it.

Cate: Please tantalize us with a story blurb or excerpt.
Margaret: Do you really know the person you love? How many of us hear the words, I never thought he/she would do that or it was so out of character for him/her to stab, chop, punch or generally terrorize the public. When Abigail falls in love with Justin, she can’t begin to know the world of hurt she is heading into. Gorgeous, kind, rich – he’s the man we all dream to meet. BUT, all is not what it seems because Justin is a true demon from hell, disguised as a mortal being. He wants her and will do, kill or maim anyone who tries to stop him. Look out for Abigail Cottage in December and no, not every story ends well!

Cate: Having read it, I can say what a great read it is! But can you tell readers why they're going to love your hero?
Margaret: Shaun has a real heart of gold. He will do anything for anyone and when he falls in love, its forever. You will love his charm, wit and sense of chivalry. His determination will spur yours, his pain will move you. Shaun O’Donnell is a man that you can’t forget.

Cate: I agree, but won't give anything away. Tease us with one little thing about your fictional world that makes it different from others.
Margaret: Being a spiritualist I have a little bit of inside information and I have combined true facts about the spirit world with fiction. So you’re never quite sure what might be real and what is probably pretend.

Cate: What's next for you?
Margaret: I have a new release with Eternal Press in January 7th. A comedy romance called Spirit Intervention. I’m half way through another romance called Crystal Magic, hopefully that will be out later in the year.

Cate: You're very busy! What inspired you to draft your first story?
Margaret: I wrote Abigail Cottage over 25 years ago originally. My inspiration being the script writers of the James Bond films. I used to work for Eon Productions. I actually wanted to emulate them, but it ended up a novel and I’ve never looked back really.

Cate: Do you have a writing routine?
Margaret: No. I know, I’m bad. I just hop on my computer as and when I can.

Cate: Where can readers find you on the web?
Margaret: I hang out mostly on my writers blog. I’m always doing giveaways and pressies to new followers, so please do pop in and say hi www.margaretwest.net
Writers blog. http://margaret-paranormalromanceauthor.blogspot.com/
Spiritual blog. http://magsx.blogspot.com/

Cate: Is there anything you’d like to ask our readers?
Margaret: Yes, what drives you to write? With me, it's second nature. I can form a story in my mind just by looking at a person, event or place.

I am doing a special giveaway with Abigail cottage. Preorder it, or buy it and show me a receipt and I will send you a bar of hand made demon in the dark soap. Made from real crystal elixir, rosa’s herb’s mentioned in the book and essential oils. A one off, made by me. I have only two bars. So you’d better hurry. Contact me through my blog at http://margaret-paranormalromanceauthor.blogspot.com/

Cate: Congrats on your upcoming releases Margaret! I wish you all the best with them. Thanks for being my guest.

Writing Dialogue

If I could write a book on the amount of questions that I’ve been asked with regards to dialogue – it would be an epic!

Realistic dialogue doesn’t always come easily to everyone. But I can’t tell you how important it is. Dialogue advances a story and fleshes out the characters while providing a break from straight exposition. But, nothing pulls the reader out of a story faster than bad dialogue. It takes time to develop a good technique, but here are a few guidelines I use that might help.

Listen to how people talk. Don’t become a stalker or anything, lol eavesdrop and scribble down phrases you like. The right words can bring a character to life. Likewise, the wrong word/phrase can destroy the reader’s belief in the character.

For instance, it’s unlikely that a builder is going to use the word “goodness me” or that a solicitor would say “blimey." Dialogue should read like real speech. But, in saying that, real speech has words and sounds that would be distracting if included on a page. New writers sometimes think that including words like “uh” and “oh” makes their dialogue sound more realistic. The truth is, these kinds of extraneous words look unprofessional. Alfred Hitchcock once wrote that a good story was “life, with the dull parts taken out.” It’s good to keep this in mind.

Now comes the tricky part. Cut words and phrases out that don’t serve the conversation’s purpose. What I mean by that is, any dialogue should move the story forward while bringing your characters to life. If it doesn’t, cut it out altogether.

The mistake I noticed a lot is that writers sometimes provide too much information at once through dialogue. It should never be obvious that you’re communicating information; otherwise you run the risk of info dumping. Give no character more than three uninterrupted sentences at once. You can trust the reader to remember details from earlier in the story. Make sure you break up dialogue with action, because physical details help to break up the words on the page.

Tag lines can be the bane of writers' lives to write and read. I am the worst culprit of all! Don’t try too hard to vary them. Veering too much beyond “he said/she said” draws attention to the tags. Readers tend to skim over them anyway. If you write “interjected,” or “he sighed,” you’ve now drawn the reader out of the action you’re trying to create. If your dialogue is working, you won’t have to say any of these words in the tag line.

Most of all, the most important thing of all is to punctuate dialogue correctly. Nothing, to an editor/publisher/agent is more distracting than a writer who doesn’t know how to use punctuation. A polished MS is no good if it’s covered in punctuation errors.

I hope this information helps. I don’t always remember to live by my own rules. But I try to!

Heart of a Warrior
A tale of two very different cultures colliding. Can love really conquer all?
When Belinda arrives fresh from England, at her father’s store on the edge of a Navajo reservation, she is faced with not only the news her father is ill in hospital, but the store is being run by Jez Lansdowne, a man she hates and distrusts. Until she can find out why Jez is suddenly her father’s new partner, Belinda is forced to live in Chief Yuma’s storage hut, next to the store.
Yuma is annoyed the fiery English woman is living on his land, as the Res is soon closing to outsiders. They clash, but a deeper emotion grows into a love that makes Yuma question his culture and traditions.

Here's an excerpt:
Belinda ran full pelt towards the sound of the waterfall. Just when she thought she was almost there, her feet left the ground and she screamed in angry frustration. Muscular arms encased her like tight bands of steel, and she clawed at them knowing in her heart that this man was way too strong for her to escape from.
“Let me go,” she screamed, scratching and kicking with every bit of strength she possessed. “Get off me.” It took a few moments for her to register the soft, masculine voice in her ear.
“Belinda, it’s all right. You’re safe now—with friends. No-one’s going to hurt you.”
Belinda continued to struggle. Friends! She didn’t have any of them in this godforsaken country. A small sob pushed through her swollen lips, as her strength began to wane.

In the Author Spotlight: Margaret West

Cate: I’m happy to welcome Margaret West to the Author Spotlight. Please share a short bio with us?
Margaret: Born in Croydon Surrey (UK) Margaret has always found writing to be a creative as well as a cathartic process, especially during difficult periods in her life. She found her true writing voice after becoming a spiritualist. Her love for literature extends from writing to reading and is always willing to embrace new ideas and philosophies. She likes nothing more then to sit with a good book in the quiet realms of the countryside, with her dogs, Milo and Chester. A true animal lover, Margaret’s warmth and sensitivity is reflected in her writing.

Cate: Tell us about your latest release, The Heart of a Warrior, and where it's available.
Margaret: The Heart of A Warrior is my favorite out of all the novels I’ve written. I try and put a message of hope in all my books and I think I have managed it in this bittersweet romance. Religion is a tricky subject. Wars have been and still are fought on the grounds of religious beliefs.
The Heart of a Warrior is not just any romance story. It is a battle fought on every page. It is the story of two people, of opposite cultural beliefs, who come together in an explosion of emotions. Yuma is a Native American chief. Belinda is a nurse from the UK. They fall in love but tradition dictates they can never be together because Yuma has to pick a wife of his tribe and culture so their child can carry on his title. The barriers against them are huge, but not insurmountable. But can some sacrifices be just too much to bear. I’ll let you decided when you read The Heart of a Warrior.

Cate: Please tantalize us with a story blurb or excerpt.
Margaret:
Yuma’s kiss caught Belinda by total surprise. One minute she felt like hell, the next minute she was floating in a sea of wondrous emotions. His lips were soft, yet demanding, as they pressed against hers. She could feel the muscles in his arms as they snaked around her and pulled her closer into his chest. Belinda’s lips pulsed with the warm flow of sensuous blood. When his tongue swept into her mouth and danced with hers, she gave a small moan of ecstasy and pressed closer to him.
His answering moan excited her and a warm flush worked its way up her body. She could smell the sweet scent of coconuts, with an under lying odor of raw masculinity. Yuma’s scent. It fired her blood further, until she was consumed with a burning need that only he could assuage.

Cate: What inspired you to write about the theme?
Margaret: I’ve always had a deep interest in the native American culture. In my healing room I have various Navajo shields and bows. I originally set out to write a book about their spiritual side and how gently they have tried to live their lives. But half way through it changed and I’m glad it did. The heart of a Warrior will always be close to my heart.

Cate: How do you develop your plots and characters?
Margaret: I always write down what I feel they will look like before I start, their personality, what they like and hate. Sometimes that’s changes as their characters grow, but I like to get some sort of foundation set. The plot to THW developed on its own really, gathering momentum as I wrote. But usually I write down ideas of how I want plots and sub plots to go before I write the book.

Cate: Do you feel as if the characters live with you as you write? Do they haunt your dreams?
Margaret: Yes, they do. I go to bed thinking what my characters would do in different circumstances, I wake up thinking what they will do today…until the book is written, the characters will become part of my life and my thoughts continuously.

Cate: What's next for you?
Margaret: I’ve already subbed a mss for a darker paranormal romance. I might have to give the submission dept a little poke soon to see if they remember me lol but at the moment I am writing a Spiritual handbook that incorporates all aspects of spirit work. I’m a Clairknowing medium and lightworker. I teach various forms of spirit work, so I thought it would be great to write a handbook that everyone could understand and relate to.

Cate: Any other published works?
Margaret: Yes, I’ve written a few paranormal romance novels, short stories and a non fiction book. Some of which can be found on my website www.margaret-west.com

Cate: Describe your writing in three words.
Margaret: inspiring,romantic, funny.

Cate: What’s the most challenging aspect of writing? Most rewarding?
Margaret: The most challenging is actually finding the time to write. I live such a hectic life and to write I need peace, quiet and clear thought. I’d say, for me, the rewarding site is walking past waterstones/ Otakars book store and seeing my book on their shelves…it’s enough to make you want to run up and down the road screaming…yes, yes , yes….lol

Cate: What’s the most interesting comment you have received about your books?
Margaret: A reviewer said about one of my books, and I quote,
Ms. West wrote with such emotion I felt as if I was looking at the world through her Characters eyes. Each one was carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders, but both handled their feelings and emotions quite differently. This story made me walk away analyzing things differently in my own life and all the people that are near and dear to me.
She ‘got’ the message I was trying to get across in the book. It doesn’t matter how bad life treats you, there is always someone out there worse off than you.

Cate: Lovely. Where can you be found on the web?
Margaret: Yes. You can find me at www.margaret-west.com
Facebook
Twitter
http://magsx.blogspot.com/
http://Margaret-paranormalromanceauthor.blogspot.com/

Cate: Is there anything you’d like to ask our readers?
Margaret: What do you look for in a romance novel? Do you always and hearts and flowers or more real life, where love is complicated and doesn’t always work out the way you’d like?

Cate: Readers, Margaret is giving away an ebook copy of The Heart of a Warrior to a random commenter... so start commenting! Be sure to leave your email address so Margaret knows how to reach you. She'll notify the winner.

Welcome special guest author Margaret West!

Cate: Please welcome author Margaret West. Margaret, will you please share a short bio with us?
Margaret: Born in Croydon, England in 1962, Margaret West was raised with her four older siblings by their mother, a social worker and father, a painter/decorator. Being energetic and animated meant her life in school was extremely interesting and she has fond memories of family holidays to the English coast with her three brothers and sister. Although her father is no longer alive, Margaret still feels he watches over her. Still supported by her mother and the rest of her family, Margaret’s drive to succeed has been a force of strength throughout her life.

Cate: Please tell us about Two Faces One Life and where it's available.
Margaret: Two Faces One Life is a coffee time break short story. It is about two people with quite different disabilities who come together, quite by chance, and forge a bond. It will melt even the hardest heart. You can buy it in print or e-book from www.eternalpress.ca

My new release, The Heart of a Warrior, is very dear to my heart. It took me two years to write and a month to edit out 200 pages lol It is due out on July 7, 2009, and can be bought from www.eternalpress.ca.

Cate: Editing the book of your heart can be heart-wrenching!
At what age did you discover writing and when were you first published? Tell us your call story.
Margaret: I started writing when I worked for the makers of the James Bond movies. Dick Maibum, a script writer for them, told me the hardest part of writing a script is the first page. That also applied to writing a novel. I did the first page in my lunch break and wrote the whole novel within two months. It had over a thousand pages and has been edited to death over 20 years. Lol I am thinking of getting it published, after all, there is only so much editing you can do to one book!!!!
My first publication was The Crystal Pendulum. A paranormal romance. I enjoyed writing it as it encompassed my spiritual work as well. I sent it off just the once to a publisher and forgot all about it. Then one evening I was dishing up dinner and mashing the potatoes, when my daughter gave me the phone and said a lady with a funny accent wanted me. With the phone propped on my shoulder I continued to mash until I heard editor of… from America…and publish my novel….in my shock the phone fell into the hot potato and I had to take the rest of the call with hot potato burning my ear. My first publication was born.

Cate: Are there any other writers, published or not, in your family?
Margaret: The only novel writer is my sister-in-law. She writes Paranormal erotica and can be found at www.christinaphillips.com.

Cate: Describe your writing in three words.
Margaret: Funny, dark, inspirational.

Cate: Do you have a writing routine?
Margaret: No, I wish I did. If I have a free moment I write. It is as simple as that.

Cate: How many hours a day do you write?
Margaret: On my day off from work I write for about 8 hours, the rest of the time it is an hour here and there.

Cate: How do you pick the character’s names?
Margaret: They just come into my head. I read a lot of various genres. I watch a lot of movies, my mind is a full of useless information lol But it helps me out occasionally.

Cate: What’s the most challenging aspect of writing? Easiest?
Margaret: Challenging… I would say devising the plot of the story. I have to think it all through before I write so I have a basic idea of what will happen. I can’t just start a story with no basic foundation. The easiest…making the characters grow and come to life. I never have a problem with making them three dimensional.
Cate: What’s the most rewarding aspect?
Margaret: Seeing my book on the shelves in a shop. I can’t help smiling whenever I see them. I think yep, you done good girlie!! lol

Cate: Do you feel as if the characters live with you as you write? Do they haunt your dreams?
Margaret: Yes, sometimes. If I am really deeply into the story, my characters come to life in my dreams and I visualize various scenarios for scenes in the book. I used to think everyone did that, but now I know they don’t!!

Cate: What’s the most interesting comment you have received about your books?
Margaret: It was more than a comment really. Here is a short paragraph from a reviewer of one of my novels. I thought it was lovely and always stuck in my mind.
“It is this kind of book that opens new doorways of understanding and empowers others to step out of their hiding and put away the fear of being ridiculed because these authors have paved that path for all to follow. Each author needs to be thanked for being such brave souls and sharing their spiritual truths. This is a book everyone needs to read. It is a book destined to be known, recommended and loved by all who read it now and for many years to come.”

Cate: That’s a lovely tribute.
Who are some of your favorite authors and books? What are you reading now?
Margaret: I love Mimi Rogers books. They are so funny and full of charm and intrigue. I love all historical, although Catherine Cookson is my favorite, followed by Joanna Trollope.

Cate: What's next for you?
Margaret: I have three novels in the works and a dark paranormal I would love to finish one day. I produce/record my own Meditation CD’s so I am working on that at the moment. Then it will be back to writing.

Cate: You’re a busy woman!
Where can readers find you on the web?
Margaret: My web site is www.margaret-west.com. Come and visit; it is full of diverse things. Leave a comment, respond to the blog on there. I love hearing from people.

Cate: Is there anything you’d like to ask our readers?
Margaret: I write a lot of spiritual romances, where the spirit world is forever present, sometimes interfering and sometimes offering guidance. I’d like to know other peoples view on this sort of writing. What attracts them to it? What would they like to ask someone in the spirit world if they got the chance?

Intriguing! Can’t wait to read the responses. Thanks again for being my guest today, Margaret! Best of luck with your releases.
